WHERE TO TRACK MOUNTAIN GORILLAS IN THE WILD

A recent population census carried out in conjunction with the three countries of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo with the help of the International Gorilla Conservation Program found that more than 50% of the mountain gorillas found in the wild live in Uganda.

In Uganda mountain gorilla safaris can be carried out in Bwindi national park which has 400 recorded mountain gorillas as well as in Mgahinga national park which is part of the Virunga Massif which consists of Volcanoes, Mgahinga and the Virunga national parks.

In Rwanda mountain gorillas can be tracked in Volcanoes national park especially in the Ruhengeri area. This park is also known as Parc des Volcans and is found in the North of the country.

What makes mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda exceptional is that in Bwindi one can also find chimpanzees which makes it the only park in the world where these two apes that are closely related to human beings can be found in the wild. Bwindi is also listed by the leading online travel magazines and birding sites as one of the best place to do bird watching in Africa. The area is one of the best places to watch some of the Albertine rift endemics. For those visiting Mgahinga national park, there is also the added advantage of being able to track the golden monkeys found in the park.

GORILLA PERMITS FEES DISCOUNTED

Uganda Wildlife Authority – UWA the body charged with protecting the country’s wildlife recently announced a discount on the mountain gorilla permit fees for the months of November 2012 as well as the months of April, May, October and November in 2013 to  350 US dollars for all foreign tourists who want to come and visit the gorillas in Uganda.
