There has been a lot of uproar about the decision by the Rwanda Development Board to increase the mountain gorilla trekking fees by Rwanda tour operators. Mountain gorilla safaris in Rwanda has been increased due to the price hike despite the economic melt down that has seen many tourists spending cautiously.

Last month the Rwanda Development Board increased the price of gorilla trekking permits. However this increment will not affect any gorilla tour booking made before or those made between the announcement and Jun1 1st 2012.

Stakeholders in the Rwanda tourism industry are not happy with the increase in the price of gorilla permits saying this will adversely affect their businesses as many clients will no longer want to come to Rwanda to do gorilla trekking safaris.

However, the Rwanda Development Board – RDB has now said that in order to conserve the mountain gorillas due to the increased gorilla tourism the increase in gorilla trekking fees will not be reserved. The increment comes at a time when the Country is enjoying increased numbers of clients coming to do gorilla safaris in Rwanda. The number of mountain gorillas in Rwanda has also increased tremendously in the last couple of years despite the fact that they were initially facing extinction.

The recovery of the number of mountain gorillas in the Wild from the brink of extinction means that the conservation efforts of the many International conservation agencies coupled with the efforts of the three governments of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo is paying off.

Despite the uproar from the different tour operators in Rwanda both local and international, the Rwanda Development Board said it is not going to go back on the increase in the price of mountain gorilla safari fees. The local tour operators say that the increase should have been in consideration of the other two neighboring countries of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo who have not increased the price of their mountain gorilla tour prices.

Mr. Edwin Sabuhoro and Mr. Kayihura Manzi Chairmen of the Tourism Chamber which is the body representing Rwanda tour operators and the Rwanda Tours and Travel Association – RTTA have however, expressed their fears about the new increase in the gorilla tour booking fees.

In a joint statement they said, “We agree that the gorilla permit increase was inevitable, however the immediate and draconian enforcement of this decision will have lasting repercussions on our industry and the image of the country”.

According to them, the new increase on the price levied on mountain gorilla safari is not welcome at this point as the amount of money being spent by tourists has significantly dwindled due to the global economic meltdown. They further said that the hike in the prices was done without proper consultation of the different stakeholders in the Rwanda tourism industry.

Rwanda has hiked the price of mountain gorilla trekking fees from $500 to $750 for foreign tourists visiting gorillas in Rwanda. That means that the gorilla trekking safari packages have been increased by 50% and this cuts across board for local and foreign residents.

Rwanda has hiked the price of mountain gorilla trekking permits. Both Rwanda and Uganda foreign tourists visiting the mountain gorillas were paying $500 dollars, however, Rwanda gorilla permits will now cost $750, 50% up from the current gorilla trekking fees.

However, the increment has raised a lot of concern among the private sector stakeholders in the hospitality and tourism industry in Rwanda. They say that the gorilla tour permits will adversely affect their businesses.

Mountain gorilla safaris in the top foreign exchange earner for Rwanda’s tourism industry, accounting for 90% of all the park fees.

In a drastic move the Rwanda Development Board – RDB said that the increment will take place with effect on 1st June 2012. However, the increment will not affect gorilla permit bookings made prior to that date so as not to affect gorilla safaris to Rwanda that were booked earlier.

This increment cuts across board with foreign residents paying $375, up from the initial $250 while the locals paying $50 dollars, instead of the $30 that they paid previously.

The private stakeholders in the tourism industry in Rwanda in a statement signed by the chairman of the Rwanda tourism chamber of Private Sector Federation – PSF that the “immediate and draconian enforcement of this decision’ will have lasting repercussions on their industry and the image of the country”

“The implementation of this increase was done without due consultation and we regret the manner in which this was done despite our attempts to consult on this process.

We have already seen strong reactions from our partners, and we are very sure that this is going to have a negative impact on our businesses and the industry at large”

The tourism foreign exchange earnings of Rwanda has seen significant increase. The sector saw an increase of 14 percent from the 2009 earnings and recorded $200 million in 2010. While in 2011, there was more than a 25% increase in earning with the Country getting $251 million.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Development Board – RDB, John Gara “This increase comes at a time when there is significant growth of the gorilla population as well as an increasing demand for gorilla tourism. We are very committed to sustain our efforts in conservation in order to protect their environment as well as the rich biodiversity that exist in our national parks”.

There has been such a significant increase in the number of mountain gorillas in Rwanda and the whole Virunga Massif as a whole. The Virunga Massif includes the border region of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. There has been an annual growth rate of 3.7% in the population of mountain gorillas which has seen a 26.3 percent increase in the number of mountain gorillas in Rwanda over the last seven years since 2005
